The Appointment of a New Provost

Dear Colleagues and Friends,

I am happy to inform you that LAU has a new Provost, Dr. George Najjar, current Dean of the Olayan School of business at AUB. Dr. Najjar, will assume his new responsibilities on October 1, 2012. He will succeed Dr. Abdallah Sfeir, our current Provost, whose contributions to LAU as Founding Dean of the School of Engineering and later on as Provost, have been immeasurable. In due time, we will have the occasion to thank Dr. Sfeir and congratulate him on all that he has done and will continue to do for LAU.

Dr. Najjar holds a Doctor of Philosophy( Ph.D.) in General Management from the University of Southern California and a Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from AUB. The positions that he currently holds are impressive indeed: Founding Dean of the Olayan School of Business at AUB (2000-present), Professor, Olayan School of Business (2003-present), member, Board of Trustees, Dhofar University/ Oman (2004-present), Member, Board of Trustees, University of Sharjah (2001-present), Member, Board of Trustees, University College of Bahrain (2006-present), member, Board of Directors, National Bank of Kuwait-Lebanon (2010-present).

From 1997 to 2006, Dr. Najjar served as Vice President for Regional External Programs , AUB. At the University of Bahrain, he served in many important capacities, on secondment from AUB, chief among them were: Founding Dean, School of Business, and Vice President for Planning. His institutional services at AUB, University of Bahrain, and University of Sharjah, are very impressive. To his credit, he has many important publications, manuscripts, and honors. He has excelled in designing and delivering innumerable executive education workshops and programs to executive constituencies at universities and at other venues in the middle East, taught scores of business courses at AUB, and served as a management consultant to many companies and business concerns, producing significant professional reports. Dr. Najjar also has to his credit many important professional memberships, including the Pre-Accreditation Committee of AACSB. His major strength areas include, among others: academic planning, research management, fund-raising, innovation and institution-building, institutional and professional accreditation, and regional and international networking.

In due time, we will welcome officially Dr. Najjar to our university and to the LAU family. Please join me in wishing him success as he prepares to assume his new responsibilities at LAU. Thank you.
