LAU’s family comes home

Homecoming and reunion events are some of the best opportunities for a university to build and maintain a link to its alumni, and LAU is keen to maintain and build positive relationships with

its family of graduates during the next series of homecoming events in Lebanon. Between July 13 and 17, 2011, LAU will host events in Lebanon catering to a wide group of alumni.

The first event of the week takes place at the Phoenicia InterContinental Hotel, which will host an alumni dinner. The attendees will also enjoy musical performances, including appearances by Lebanese violinist Vanessa Nassar and vocalist Dory Kassab.

Homecoming festivities will include an all-class reunion on July 14 in Beirut and July 15 in Byblos, which will include a reception for alumni from LAU and its preceding institutions, BUC, BCW and AJCW since the 1950s. After the reception, the film Teta, Alf Marra (Grandmother, A Thousand Times), directed by alumnus Mahmoud Kabbour, will be screened for those attending. Kabbour’s film, which focuses on his late grandmother, has earned him plaudits throughout the Middle East, and sold-out screenings in Tunis, Rotterdam and Damascus. On the 16th, LAU President Joseph Jabbra will host a brunch at the university’s Beirut campus, and the week will end with a tour of Ehden Village.

Abdallah Al Khal, the director of LAU’s alumni relations office, and his staff are integral to the success of the university’s homecoming events. Al Khal also explained that the opportunity for alumni to connect remains a powerful draw; over a thousand alumni attended the 2010 events, and about as many are expected to attend this year’s festivities.

“The Homecoming events are networking platforms primarily for alumni and classmates to reconnect, exchange business cards, and benefit from each other’s experiences, Al Khal said. "Then we have fun…it’s a platform and an opportunity that only the university can provide.”
